Hi, I’m Kevin. I’m 38 years old, and, for the first time in a long time, I feel good! Why? Because I changed my relationship with food, and what I considered to be food.
Let’s back up a bit…
On August 10, 2016, I got some bad news. Turns out I had developed type 2 diabetes. Yikes! My fasting blood sugar was 246 mg/dL, and apparently that’s pretty high. Honestly, I’d been anticipating much worse for a while now. I figured I was destined for a heart attack, and sooner rather than later. Seriously… to the point that I was having regular anxiety attacks. The scary part was that I thought it would probably take something as serious as a heart attack for me to change. You see, I weighed nearly 300 lbs, I was on three blood pressure medications, I took heartburn pills every day, carried gout medication around with me in case of flare-ups, never had any energy, had trouble sleeping, experienced regular migraines… the list goes on. I knew the main issue here was my diet and lack of physical activity. My eating habits were terrible.
My doctor told me to think of the diabetes diagnosis as a “wake-up call”. He was right. My body was trying to tell me to change. I’ll admit, I was scared. Who wouldn’t be? I knew this would impact the rest of my life. I decided right then and there that it would be a positive impact. So I made some changes.
Ending Bad Relationships
Just like any bad relationship, I thought it best to end it quick… just rip the band-aid off. I’ve always been an all or nothing kinda guy. That’s partly to blame for why I’m in this mess — Fat-free ranch dressing? Get real! Diet Coke? Hell no! You wanna supersize that? Duh, yeah! — why not make that work for me? So I quit cold-turkey. No more meat, no more cheese, no more animal products at all. No processed foods, no more refined foods like sugar and white flour… strictly whole, plant-based foods.
Whole Food, Plant-Based Results
The results have been phenomenal! I've lost a lot of weight. I don’t need heartburn meds anymore, gout is a thing of the past, I can’t remember the last time I had a migraine, and I’m off my blood pressure pills. I'm pill free! I can’t tell you how happy that makes me! I was on blood pressure medication for over a decade! It took less than a year of whole food, plant based eating to change that. On top of that, I never took a single diabetes pill. My fasting blood sugar was 246 when I started, last time I checked it was 76! I haven’t seen it above 90 in months. My blood sugar levels plummeted nearly immediately, and my diabetes symptoms vanished almost overnight. I feel great, I look great, I’ve got energy, I sleep better, and I don’t have anxiety attacks about heart attacks anymore. I feel like a new man!
I feel obligated to spread the word. I think there’s a better way to live life, and it starts with better food choices and eating real food. Many people feel that a whole food, plant-based diet is extreme. I think the standard American diet is extreme! The heavily refined, manufactured foods that most of us live on are fake foods. They’re extremely high in calories, and dangerously low in nutrients. We’ve become a society of overweight people that are poorly nourished. It’s time to start changing that.
Our friends and loved ones are slowly killing themselves one forkful at a time. That's by choice, and it doesn't have to be that way. We can live longer, fuller lives by changing our relationship with food. Like anything worth doing, it’s not easy, but it’ll have a big impact.
